Draft Cross Horses

Why the Draft Cross?

I rode Quarter Horses for years and love the breed, but I’ve grown to prefer draft crosses. I often say, “There’s nothing wrong with a calm horse.” The draft mare’s bone, size, and quiet mind combined with the Quarter Horse stallion’s athleticism and smarts make for versatile, easy-going foals that take naturally to groundwork and saddle work.

The Merry Band Farm

Tom is a former college football player, musician (listen to his album Sunday Afternoon here) publisher, father of four and horseman. He loves breeding and training young horses so that they have a sound foundation for whatever direction you choose. He believes the draft cross gives you the most options for your horse.

Tom’s passion is breeding and training young horses. The process of choosing mares and stallions, foaling, and then bringing that foal along never loses its appeal. He spent many years playing and coaching sports and then starting and running businesses. He says working with young horses is really coaching. Each horse, like each player, has a different personality and responds a little differently. Figuring out how to work with each individual player or horse to get the best result is the key to success.
